State FairTax® initiatives are gaining momentum. The governor of Maine, Paul LePage, recently proposed a constitutional amendment to ban any form of income tax for the state. He wants to replace the income tax with a sales tax and some other taxing measures. He recognizes the difficulty in accomplishing this objective because he is “asking elected officials to voluntarily give up power they currently wield.”

The proposal is not likely to pass because Democrats who control the State House of Representatives are opposed to the measure. Even if the proposal does not pass at this time, it does help spread the idea among the voters that tax systems can be radically changed. It encourages discussion of using consumption taxes to replace income taxes. The more that people hear and learn about consumption taxes and the FairTax, the closer we come to enacting FairTax legislation on a state and, eventually, a national level.
